Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe has announced GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, a brand-new action game set within an entirely new timeline in the Gundam universe. Developed by Bandai Namco Studios Inc., the game will launch on 5 March 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.
Rather than revisiting one of the franchise’s established timelines, GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT introduces a new story in which humanity is fighting for survival against an unknown threat known as the Apocalypse.
Players will take control of the powerful new Gundam Helix as ace pilot RE-X, battling across the solar system alongside an unusual companion and facing enemies that appear to be anything but ordinary.
A New Gundam Timeline Begins
The latest release-date trailer provides a closer look at the world of GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, including new characters, customised Mobile Suits and a particularly mysterious black Mobile Suit with glowing red eyes.
That last detail is probably going to have Gundam fans reaching for the conspiracy boards.
The story follows RE-X, an ace pilot entrusted with the Gundam Helix, who is accompanied by Vii, a Haro unit designed specifically to serve as the Mobile Suit’s intelligent general-purpose assistant.
Together, they find themselves caught up in humanity’s struggle against the Apocalypse, travelling across the solar system as the threat continues to grow.
Meet the Characters of GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT
RE-X won’t be travelling through this new Gundam timeline alone. The trailer introduces several of the characters who will play a role in the story.
Sofia
Sofia is a mysterious young woman who appears to be closely monitoring RE-X’s movements. Exactly what she wants, and why she is so interested in the pilot, remains unclear.
April
April serves as captain of the Stellarvane, an independent special-duty vessel tasked with carrying out missions against the Apocalypse.
Big Paul
Big Paul leads a group of sand pirates who hunt the Apocalypse while raiding wealthy transports. Rather than keeping everything for themselves, the pirates distribute their supplies to settlers, making them considerably more complicated than your typical band of space pirates.
Elaine
Elaine is a knight commander and highly skilled Mobile Suit pilot who leads her forces directly from the front lines.
With such a varied group of characters already being introduced, it looks like GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT is aiming to build a story that extends well beyond the usual battle between obvious heroes and villains.
Build Your Mobile Suit Your Way
Combat is another major part of GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, with players given extensive control over how their Mobile Suit is configured.
Different weapons, frames, thrusters and Apocalypse Units (AP-U) can be equipped to create a setup that suits your preferred style of play. Players can also customise their Mobile Suit’s colour scheme.
Each weapon comes with its own actions and skills, meaning customisation isn’t simply about making your Gundam look cool. Your equipment choices can influence how you approach battles and allow different builds to work better in different situations.
Combat will take place across large zones both on the ground and in the air, giving players plenty of room to experiment with their customised Mobile Suit.

IGC Take: A New Gundam Timeline Is Exactly What the Franchise Needs
There is an obvious advantage to creating a completely new timeline for GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT: Bandai Namco doesn’t have to spend the entire game trying to fit between events that Gundam fans already know inside out.
Instead, Bandai Namco Studios has the freedom to create its own characters, Mobile Suits, conflicts and mythology while still using the core ingredients that make Gundam so appealing.
The customisation could be particularly interesting. Being able to change weapons, frames, thrusters and AP-U systems means there appears to be considerably more to building the Gundam Helix than simply selecting which gun looks coolest.
Then there’s that mysterious black Mobile Suit with the glowing red eyes.
We have absolutely no idea what’s going on with that thing yet, but it has already achieved the most important requirement for any Gundam rival: it looks bloody terrifying.
The Collector’s Edition will also undoubtedly attract the serious Gundam collectors, particularly with an exclusive HG 1/144 Gundam Helix model kit included.
There is still plenty we need to see before we can judge whether GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT can stand alongside the franchise’s better games, but a new timeline, a new Mobile Suit, large-scale battles and deep customisation give this one a very promising starting point.
Now we just need to find out what the hell that red-eyed Mobile Suit is.
