In 2025, global technology sales are projected to reach a staggering $5.6 trillion, with consumer electronics alone accounting for $1 trillion. Yet, over £9 billion is estimated to be spent annually by Brits replacing broken gadgets.
With millions of tech items failing yearly, stainless steel screw retailer Accu analyzed search data to uncover which devices are failing users the least. By comparing the volume of “fault” related searches to those indicating a purchase, Accu reveals which gadgets truly last longer.

Why Samsung Galaxy Tops the List
Samsung Galaxy leads with a ratio of 16.9 buying searches per broken search, marking it the most durable tech analyzed. The recent Galaxy S25, released in February 2025, helped Samsung ship the highest number of smartphones globally in Q1 2025. Known for durable aluminum frames (including Armor Aluminium) and improved water resistance, Samsung phones have a reputation for toughness.
Though some criticisms have surfaced about the S25’s durability and battery overheating on the Ultra model, its overall robustness remains unmatched.
PlayStation’s Enduring Popularity and Issues
Sony’s PlayStation, with nearly 78 million units sold globally, ranks second. For every search about faults, 11 are looking to buy.
However, overheating is a common issue with the PS5 (94,800 yearly searches), linked to a known liquid metal cooling design flaw causing components to be damaged when the console is used vertically. The PS5’s typical 5-7 year lifespan aligns with planned obsolescence, as the upcoming PS6 may render the older console less viable for new games.
Google Pixel’s Growing Market Share and Durability
Google Pixel ranks third with 10.6 buying searches per broken search. The Pixel 9 boosted Google to third place globally in smartphone sales behind Samsung and Apple. It is reportedly twice as durable as the Pixel 8.
The upcoming Pixel 10 launch on August 20, 2025, is anticipated to further strengthen its reputation for resilience.
Other Notable Findings
- Xbox Series consoles hold fourth place, also with overheating as the most searched issue (25,200 yearly).
- Apple’s iPhone falls to fifth with a 3.9 ratio, trailing competitors. Common faults include devices “won’t turn on” or “won’t charge.” Apple’s 2017 “Batterygate” lawsuit for slowing down iPhones to preserve battery health remains a notable blemish.
- Popular gaming devices like Nintendo Switch and major PC brands like HP, Lenovo, Dell, and Asus show lower durability ratios.
Expert Insight from Accu’s Lead Engineer Patrick Faulkner
“Consumer technology is becoming more powerful but also more prone to damage due to compact designs and exotic materials. Investing in protection like high-quality screen protectors and cases, and maintaining proper device care—like cleaning consoles and avoiding overheating—is crucial.
Researching products with strong build quality and positive reviews is essential. While no tech is indestructible, proper care dramatically reduces repair and replacement needs.”
Methodology
Accu collected data from Ahrefs (July 2025), analyzing average monthly global searches related to buying and repairing/faults of tech products, then calculated annualized figures. The ratio of “buy” to “broken” searches highlights products failing least often.
