Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment have officially released John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, the long-awaited co-op zombie shooter inspired by the over-the-top action horror of the 1980s. The game is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
To celebrate the launch, the developers have released a brand-new launch trailer showcasing the game’s chaotic battles, massive zombie hordes, and explosive action gameplay.
Powered by Saber Interactive’s Swarm Engine – the same technology used in World War Z: Aftermath and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 – the game throws players into intense battles against waves of grotesque undead creatures and massive boss monsters.

John Carpenter Brings His Signature Horror Style
The legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, known for creating some of the most iconic horror films ever made, played a key role in shaping the tone and atmosphere of the game.
Speaking about the release, Carpenter kept things simple but direct:
“The game is finally out. Play it. It’s good and it’s fun. You may not be ready for these ghouls to attack you but when they do you better learn fast! They will overwhelm you. These ghouls are out for business! Time to kick ass!”
The result is a chaotic blend of horror, action, and dark humor that pays tribute to classic grindhouse-style films.
Fight the Apocalypse as the Toxic Commandos
The story takes place in a near-future world where a failed experiment to harness energy from the Earth’s core triggers a catastrophic event. The disaster turns the planet’s soil into toxic sludge and transforms countless people into terrifying undead monsters.
The scientist responsible for the experiment, Leon Dorsey, attempts to fix the disaster by hiring a team of elite mercenaries.
There’s just one problem — the real professionals are too expensive.
Instead, he recruits a less-than-perfect group of fighters known as the Toxic Commandos. They might not be the most qualified team on the planet, but they’re humanity’s last hope.
Four-Player Co-op Chaos
John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is built around cooperative gameplay, allowing up to four players to team up and tackle missions together.
The game supports full crossplay between consoles and PC, meaning players can squad up with friends regardless of platform.
Players will battle through a semi-open world filled with endless waves of mutated enemies, completing missions while trying to survive increasingly dangerous encounters.
Vehicles scattered across the map can also be used to run down zombies, adding another layer of chaotic fun to the gameplay.
Weapons, Abilities, and Over-the-Top Action
Combat in the game is designed to be fast, loud, and completely over the top. Players can use a wide variety of weapons and tools to fight back against the undead.
This includes:
- Assault weapons and heavy firearms
- Grenades and explosive gadgets
- Unique character abilities
- Melee weapons such as katanas
But when massive waves of mutated monsters close in from every direction, survival depends on teamwork. Coordinating attacks, reviving teammates, and managing resources becomes critical when the Swarm Engine unleashes its huge zombie hordes.
For fans of chaotic co-op shooters and classic horror action, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando looks ready to deliver a wild ride through the apocalypse.
