SQUARE ENIX has revealed a major surprise for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE during today’s Sony State of Play, confirming that one of the most recognisable villains in the franchise will be making an appearance when the new HD-2D RPG launches later this year.
Yes, Sephiroth is in FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE.
Players will be able to find and challenge the legendary villain, with those who manage to defeat him earning a special reward. Alongside the Sephiroth reveal, SQUARE ENIX has also released a free playable demo, giving curious players several hours to see whether this unusual take on FINAL FANTASY lives up to its promise.
Sephiroth Is Waiting for a Challenge
The latest gameplay trailer confirms that Sephiroth won’t simply be appearing as a background cameo.
Players will be able to discover and challenge him during their adventure, turning one of the most famous characters in FINAL FANTASY history into an optional test of their party’s abilities.
Exactly how difficult the encounter will be remains to be seen, but there’s an obvious incentive beyond bragging rights: defeating Sephiroth will unlock a special reward.
Considering just how many FINAL FANTASY characters are being brought together in RESONANCE, Sephiroth is also another example of how the game is designed as a celebration of the wider franchise rather than a traditional numbered entry.
A Free FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE Demo Is Available Now
Even better, players don’t have to wait until October to get their hands on the game.
The free FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE demo is available now on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Xbox on PC.
The demo allows players to experience the opening of the game through the entirety of its first chapter, providing approximately 3–5 hours of gameplay.
Most importantly, this isn’t a throwaway demo that leaves your progress behind. Save data will carry over into the full game when FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE launches on 22 October 2026.
That makes the demo considerably more appealing for anyone already considering picking the game up. You can spend several hours exploring the Kingdom of Grandshelt, get a feel for the combat and story, and simply continue where you left off when the full game arrives.
A New HD-2D Take on FINAL FANTASY
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is being positioned as the first HD-2D game in the FINAL FANTASY series, combining the pixel-art aesthetic of the franchise’s classic era with the modern presentation that has become synonymous with Square Enix’s HD-2D RPGs.
The game is based on the first story arc of the mobile RPG FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS, but this isn’t intended to be a straightforward port.
SQUARE ENIX has rebuilt and refined the original material into a full console-quality RPG, with a new presentation designed to appeal both to long-time fans and players discovering the story for the first time.
Classic FINAL FANTASY Meets Modern HD-2D
At the heart of RESONANCE is a strategic turn-based combat system with a modern twist, wrapped around a story involving the series’ familiar obsession with Crystals.
Players can also expect the return of classic FINAL FANTASY staples including chocobos, espers and airships, while characters from across the franchise will make appearances.
That includes some seriously recognisable faces, with Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light all confirmed to appear alongside Sephiroth.
The result is essentially a celebration of FINAL FANTASY history presented through the HD-2D visual style, using detailed pixel-art characters and environments alongside modern effects and presentation.
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE Release Date
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE will launch on 22 October 2026 for:
- PlayStation 5
- Nintendo Switch 2
- Nintendo Switch
- Xbox Series X|S
- PC via Steam
- Xbox on PC
Pre-orders are now available across all platforms, while the free demo provides an opportunity to play the opening chapter before deciding whether to jump into the full adventure.
IGC Take: Square Enix Knows Exactly How to Get Our Attention
Let’s be honest, SQUARE ENIX knew exactly what it was doing by putting Sephiroth in that trailer.
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE was already an interesting proposition. Taking material from FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS, rebuilding it into a console RPG and giving it the HD-2D treatment is a pretty unusual way to expand the franchise.
But then you throw Sephiroth into the mix and suddenly every FINAL FANTASY fan is paying attention.
The more interesting part, however, might actually be the demo. Three to five hours is a decent chunk of RPG to give away, and because the save carries over to the full release, players aren’t being asked to start again after spending their time with it.
That’s exactly how a demo should work.
The combination of classic characters, turn-based combat, chocobos, airships, espers and that gorgeous HD-2D presentation could make FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE one of the more interesting releases in the franchise this year.
And if Sephiroth is waiting somewhere in the game for us to kick his arse for a special reward, well… obviously we’re going to have to do that.
