Glorious Model O Mouse Review

Glorious has graciously sent us their Model O Mouse for review. Now while this mouse has been around for quite some time, it’s still making waves because of its trend-setting design. So what exactly makes it so special and is it a worthwhile purchase in 2020 ?

Now that that’s out of the way let’s get into the mouse itself. First up, the packaging. The Glorious Model O comes in quite a visually appealing box. The minimalist two tone packaging with shiny text and a shiny mouse outline sure is eye-catching. Does it scream premium though at the top of its lungs? Maybe not but that’s only external packaging so nothing really worth complaining about when it’s most likely going to be thrown away after the warranty is over.

Opening up the box, you are presented with the mouse, sitting snugly in a groove. The mouse’s cable is tied up and neatly placed above the mouse itself within another groove. Fairly standard fare here. You do also get a holographic effect Glorious sticker and that’s pretty cool if you’re into that kind of thing. Rounding off the package is the quickstart guide and product documentation.

Immediately when picking up the mouse, you’ll notice just how light it is. It doesn’t give off an ultra-premium feeling like with say, a Corsair Scimitar or Corsair Glaive but it certainly doesn’t feel lacklustre either. For gamers out there that are concerned about feeling the honeycomb-like holes cut out of the mouse surface, you barely notice this when holding the mouse. The mouse feels strong enough to survive a fall from moderate height but we don’t recommend throwing it around too much.

Moving towards the front portion of the mouse, the USB cable needs a special mention. The cable is not detachable but it is ultra-flexible. Being ultra-flexible though, it doesn’t instill much confidence in us in terms of longevity. Mixed reactions to this will abound. Especially if you’re going to be moving the mouse around or putting it into a bag and taking it out quite often. The cable is however quite long at 2 meters so if your pc is far back on your table, you’ll have plenty of cable real estate to work with.

Using the mouse on our fabric mousepad was extremely effortless thanks to the G-skates premium mouse feet. These will glide along most normal surfaces with ease. Combined with the mouse’s light weight, this is great for gamers who play competitive titles such as CS:GO since they can customize the DPI and flick their mouse around without much mouse feet resistance bogging it down.

Clicking the buttons on the mouse felt satisfying since Glorious have opted to use Omron switches here. There are only 6 buttons here though so if you require more buttons, you’ll have to look elsewhere. The Model O has a very pleasing click sound when pressing either the left or right mouse button as evidenced in the video below:

The sensor used in the Glorious Model O is a Pixart PMW-3360 sensor. This is a $30 sensor that features in some rather well-known competing mouse brands out there so seeing it in the Model O is good news for gamers. The Pixart PMW-3360 sensor is quite great with a 1,000hz(1ms) polling rate and users can even change the lift off detection using the Glorious software suite. The mouse supports a maximum DPI of 12000 and changing your DPI settings can be done either by physically pressing a button on the mouse or by using the Glorious software suite which you can download off their official website.

Rounding off the mouse are the RGB lights. These aren’t exactly the most premium of lighting solutions but you can still adjust the lighting using either software or by pressing a combination of buttons on the mouse itself. We opted to leave the mouse on its default Glorious RGB setting since it seemed to be the most visually pleasing style.

Now for the most controversial aspect of the mouse. It’s actual gaming usage. If you are a fan of lightweight mouses and you have medium to large sized hands, the Model O should be ideal for you. If you have smaller hands, you may want to get the smaller sized Model O-. The Model O features an ambidextrous design so whether you’re right or left-handed, you’ll still be able to use the mouse. Using it for gaming, players might need to spend some time with the mouse to get to grips with its lighter weight. If you’re moving from something significantly heavier to this mouse, you may end up struggling somewhat since the lighter weight does take some getting used to. Once you’ve acclimatized though, it’s quite difficult to go back to what you have been using.

Using the mouse to play Destiny 2: Beyond Light, the experience was satisfying throughout. Mapping in-game actions to the extra side buttons were easy and the mouse performed as expected during our play session. Ergonomically speaking, we would have liked for the mouse to have two extra buttons on the right-hand side to make it truly symmetrical and thus more suited for left-handed gamers but alas this isn’t the case. The mouse wheel was quite enjoyable to use in-game with a solid feel to it and a satisfying click to it too.

With all that said though, this is still a very “personal preference” type of device. There are plenty of gamers out there that may prefer a heavier, chunkier mouse rather than a lightweight smooth gliding one. I personally prefer the heavier type and using the Model O, while perfectly acceptable from a technical viewpoint, just wasn’t for me based on my personal preference. If you are able to try out a sample of the Model O, it’s highly recommended that you do that first before spending your hard-earned money on it.

If you do choose to purchase a Glorious Model O you can, however, rest assured that you are getting a rather solid product overall even if the marketing attached to it is over the top. The Pixart sensor in the mouse is still a great component even now in 2020 and there aren’t many lightweight options available in the price range the Model O sits in (Around $50). As with all tech products, always do your research before spending money and if you can try out the Model O first before purchasing it, you definitely should. This is not a mouse for everyone based on its key selling point of weighing 67 grams but if you’re in the market for something light that won’t break the bank, this might be the mouse for you.
