Lately, we’ve witnessed a lot of remakes/remasters/reboots and they were not all met with enthusiasm and joy from everybody. Not all of them were worthy of being a replacement of their originals and some gamers were definitely looking for original stuff, rather than getting the same game over and over again. This topic can be quite controversial as most of those releases can be seen as an easy way to make money by just milking the cow further.
Before venturing deeper into that matter, we’re gonna give a quick explanation of what a remaster actually is. A remaster would be re-releasing a game by just polishing the graphics, adding better sound effects, merely improving the gameplay, and overall getting an enhanced version of the original that is supposed to carry the spirit of the original.
What is so good about them? They are usually a great way to play a game on a new generation of gaming platforms if you’ve never got around to playing them when they were released. If you’re looking to buy these games for your PlayStation collection, make sure to get some PlayStation Gift Cards!
So, with no further delay – here are the best remastered games that you should check out!
Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (PS4)
Uncharted games have always been one of the PlayStation headliners and they should be tried out by anyone owning a PS3. What about those having only a PS4?! Don’t you worry about that, Naughty Dog gave us a remaster of not just one but the whole first three games of the franchise in the form of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.
Each game in this sweet collection made a fluid transition to the next generation by adding 1080p graphics in 60 frames per second, more detailed textures and models, leaderboards to match yourself with your online buddies, and more difficulty settings.
But the magical thing in this remaster is that all three games – Drake’s Fortune, Among Thieves, and Drake’s Deception now feel like one big and lengthy game. Probably the only thing that is missing is multiplayer, but if you can live with that, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection is a must-have.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS)
One of the best (if not the best) games of all time on handheld?! Yes, Nintendo gave us that back in the day when Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was ported to the Nintendo 3DS. A great chance to carry this masterpiece in your pocket wherever you go.
Highly acclaimed by critics, this remaster kept the spirit of the original but brought it to an even wider audience with updated graphics, stereoscopic effects, dungeons from Master Quest, implementation of touch screen controls for menu navigation, ‘’Boss Challenge” mode and so much more.
Hey, listen! If you want to travel back to Hyrule, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a great way to do so!
The Last of Us Remastered (PS4)
One of the finest games of the seventh generation of consoles and a milestone in storytelling. The Last of Us pushed PS3 to its limits and felt like playing a movie but still keeping the charm of a video game.
It would have been a shame to keep it only on PS3, so we eventually got a PS4 version that was an enhanced port with better lighting, even more, beautiful textures, has 60 frames per second, fixed annoying glitches, and overall created a next-gen feel. Let’s not forget – it also packs all the DLCs that are out.
The Last of Us remastered feels like a simple and beautiful port as if the original was being made with such an idea when Naughty Dog was developing it. According to recent news, we are about to get a re-remaster for PS5. We are not sure if this is really needed as this one feels as good as it gets.
Resident Evil HD (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, PC)
Even the greatest games might age badly. Despite Resident Evil being a blast in the mid-90s if it wasn’t for the remakes and new installments it wouldn’t have been the cult it is today. Or maybe not…well anyways with its 24 games in total so far, we have to give credit to the beginning of this franchise – the original game.
Capcom celebrated its existence in 2015, nearly 20 years since it came out with an awesome remastered version for almost all popular platforms at that time.
Resident Evil HD remake is stepping on the foundations of a 2002 GameCube remake of the same game but it further improved the title by adding HD graphics, 16:9 ratio, 3D models, prerendered backgrounds, new gameplay mechanics, additional areas to be explored, and more, which we will leave to you to find out, as this spooky title is a must-play for any horror fan.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Are they re-releasing, after all this time the whole trilogy just to fix Mass Effect 3’s terrible ending? Don’t worry it’s not just that. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a great way to experience this great sci-fi action RPG again.
Bioware was originally exploring the idea of remaking the whole thing but ultimately decided to simply remaster it to preserve the spirit of the original. The effect is massive as you can probably guess. Graphics, combat mechanics, loading times, upgrades, and gameplay changes, made this recently released remaster to be greeted with love by both fans and critics alike. Needless to say that this sweet package includes all the DLC from the originals!
Go try it even if you have already played and beaten the originals. The jump from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4 is masterfully executed as Bioware consulted themselves with Epic. Nothing is butchered, everything is kept in its original source form and yet Mass Effect Legendary Edition plays fresh. And yeah, the ending of Mass Effect 3 is officially fixed.
Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced Edition (Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Android, PC, iOS, Linux, macOS)
Another Bioware game remaster. This one definitely is less popular than Mass Effect or any in this list. However, this is due to end soon as Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming out and might change things. But we need to pay tribute to the original and its sequel, two of the best RPGs to ever grace the gaming world.
Luckily after the first one was released, Baldur’s Gate II was also remastered for consoles, PC, and mobile devices. Do not expect the same jump in graphics that were in the ones above. Rather than that you receive basically the same game in a better resolution and sound, which considering the cult classic reputation of the original, rockets it sky-high.
If 2D graphics are not scaring you, go pay Amn a visit. Amn is a setting in the game, which is a continent that is torn apart by conflicts, populated with all kinds of magical creatures, deceptive gods, dragons, an incredible amount of magic, and the cute hamster Boo. All that is brought to the gaming screen by adapting the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons rules in it!
To Conclude:
We can safely say that nowadays we are getting far too many remakes or remasters. Actually, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Going back to an old title, can be quite nostalgic and bring us back to the old times in a new and fresh way.
But here comes the question – Should those new reads on old games stray too far from the original? Should they keep the spirit of the original idea or transition it completely into the new generation of graphics and gameplay mechanics? Why not get a new game, if it is going to be too different from its original source? Share your thoughts on this in the comment section below.
