If only we had money to burn.
We could pick up all of the AAA titles we ever wanted to play, purchase the biggest and flashiest TV on which to play them on, and still have enough money left over to buy a PS5, Xbox Scarlett, or both!
Unfortunately, not many of us have such a luxury. With bills to pay and food to put on the table, very few of us can afford to live out an extravagant gaming lifestyle.
Thankfully, it is possible to live life as a frugal gamer. We can wait until the biggest, and best new titles come down in price. We can pay a one-off fee to game subscription services such as Gamespass and PS Now and play as many games as we have the time for. And we can swap titles with our gamer friends, with the promise that we won’t spread mucky fingerprints all over their game discs.
Oh, and for the context of this article, of course, we can also play certain titles for free. We are going to list just a few of them, and while they might not be the best video games of all time, they are still very much worth your time if you’re a fan of their particular genres.
#1: Madalin Stunt Cars 3
Here’s a game you don’t even need to download, as you can stream Madalin Stunt Cars 3 from your browser window on a Mac or Windows PC. With over 60 cars to choose from, console-quality graphics (if you have a decent computer to play it on), and a building mechanic to let you design your own mind-bending stunt tracks, this is a fantastic game to spend time with, be that on your own or with other car-crazy folks in multiplayer. So, upset that you didn’t get to play/couldn’t afford Forza’s Hot Wheels expansion? This is the frugal choice.
#2: Fortnite
Available on everything from your android smartphone to your PS4 console, Epic Games’ Fortnite has taken the world by storm. While you can create your own levels for gamers to explore and play the game PVE-style, it is the Battle Royale mode that people generally come for. Skydiving from the airship (don’t forget to thank the driver), you land on the giant map, and quickly scramble to grab the best guns you can find to take on the other players with the hope that you will become the last-man-standing. It’s easier said than done, of course, but if you get a handle on the game’s fort-building mechanics, you might just survive until the end.
#3: Star Wars: The Old Republic
Like many MMORPGs before it, this started life as a paid release before becoming available under a free-to-play model. Graphically a little dated when compared to newer titles under the Star Wars banner (it originally came out in 2011), this PC title is still a blast for anybody looking to bring balance to the force (or to unleash their inner Sith). Craft your own character according to your playstyle, be you Jedi Knight, Bounty Hunter, Sith Warrior, or any of their corresponding offshoots, and make yours across the Star Wars universe alone or with others in an incredible emerging storyline. You can download the game here.
