Sony’s PS5 is coming this holiday season and we’re beginning to get a slow trickle of official announcements of titles that will be coming to the new console.
After some very tech-heavy presentations from Sony, we’re all more than aware of what the new console will have under the hood: raytracing, 4K as the new standard, ultra-fast proprietary disc-access technology, and a ridiculous number of something called Teraflops which has become the topic of many a Reddit debate.
But what does that all mean for you, the gamer? The answer is: nothing at all until we can get some real news about the games coming out. Here’s a compilation of titles confirmed for the PS5 so we can all get a preview of what the next generation has in store.
Admittedly, there isn’t much — certainly far fewer than we’d have expected considering how near we are to release — but we do have a very solid list of games that will be coming to the PS5 at or very soon after launch. Thankfully, there seems to be a healthy balance of both new and old properties, and the trailers we’ve seen, early as they are, have been visually and technically impressive.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
No year is complete without an announcement about the next Assassin’s Creed title. Valhalla puts you in control of Eivor, a hot-blooded Viking warrior, as he leaves his home in Norway for the cold beaches of England.
This time around, Ubisoft is throwing some rather complex management and strategy making into the mix. As you rise to a leadership position, your responsibilities will include building settlements and carrying out raids on nearby towns.
Of course, you’ll still be knocking elbows with (or burying a blade into) important figures in real-world history. It’ll be interesting to see whether the village management aspect of Valhalla will become a core mechanic and how Ubisoft is going to balance it with the free-flowing murder we’re all familiar with.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
“Sure, playing as a powerful wizard, a sword-swinging king, and an agile elven archer are great, but I really wish I could be that crooked-backed, gray-skinned, bug-eyed Gollum character,” said nobody ever. Even so, fans of Tolkien won’t want to miss seeing Middle Earth from the eyes of one of its most infamous characters.
From what little we’ve seen, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is looking to be a more intimate adventure, taking the players on a narrative-driven journey. The developers promise to explore the history and psyche of the famed madman and his all-consuming obsession with a certain, very precious piece of jewelry.
Watch Dogs: Legion
Ubisoft is still hoping that persistence will pay off big for this series. Originally slated for release in March of this year, Ubisoft eventually announced that the release of Legion would be delayed until at least some time between April and December.
Watch Dogs: Legion is taking the series in a whole new direction, giving the players the ability to recruit agents from the general populace. This means nearly all of the game’s virtual citizens can be recruited into your organization. We can’t wait for the inevitable creation of a ‘Septuagenarian Cyber Army’, with canes in hand and high-waisted khakis, raging against the machine.
Those hoping to get their hands on Legion as soon as possible might want to keep their money in their pockets for a while. At the tail end of 2019, a spokesperson from Ubisoft confirmed it would be coming to PS5, though they didn’t mention a specific release date.
Godfall
Gearbox was quick to announce their first game for the next generation. Godfall is a loot-based, co-op RPG that looks like a melee-focused Borderlands. Tone-wise, it’s certainly going for a completely different style, apparently more somber and serious in tone than the cel-shaded, over-the-top shooter.
We don’t have much information about Godfall other than how it will look and its basic gameplay. At least Gearbox is taking a break from Borderlands, even if Godfall borrows heavily from it.
Outriders
Outriders is developed by People Can Fly, the team best known for frenetic first-person shooters like Bulletstorm and Painkiller. This is a brand new IP that appears to be a mix of Obsidian-style, character-driven RPG and balls-to-the-wall first-person destruction with big guns and bigger explosions.
Mankind is leaving Earth for a new home, a mysterious planet called Enoch. Things take a turn for the wild and crazy when scientists discover an enigmatic power from beyond granting certain individuals on Enoch with superhuman abilities.
Knowing People Can Fly, you can be sure we’ll see some really crazy gameplay ideas in Outriders.
Rainbow Six: Siege
This team-based, squad shooter is officially coming to PS5, completely updated (meaning all operators and content updates are ready to go) and with support for cross-generational play with PS4.
If you’re a fan of cerebral shooters with heavy teamplay elements, there’s really no better title to jump into. Siege gave up on the narrative-driven focus of previous titles in the series for a purely competitive-based multiplayer experience. The cross-generational play is good news for PS4 players looking to migrate to the new generation sooner rather than later.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk depicts a dystopian future more colorful than what we’re accustomed to. Already well into development, Cyberpunk 2077 is easily CD Projekt RED’s most ambitious title to date, with a scale and level of detail that trumps even their previous masterpiece, the amazing Witcher 3.
The game takes us to a cybernetic metropolis where the lines between man and machine are blurred and frightening cyborg gangs rule the streets. It’s gritty, frightening, and absolutely captivating, posing a question that has become increasingly relevant in this era of artificial intelligence: what does it mean to be human?
It also promises 100% more Keanu Reeves than we had ever hoped or expected, the ageless Hollywood star playing a key role in the game’s story.
Surprisingly, Sony’s first-party studios are remaining hush-hush about any titles in the works. Considering how important first-party titles have proven to be to the success of the Playstation 4, we’re as curious as you are to see what they’ve got cooking in the kitchen.
