Avicii Invector from Hello There Games and Wired Productions is a great game that combines Avicii’s music with rhythm orientated gameplay. Tim Bergling’s music touched the lives of so many and the game is a fitting tribute to his life’s work. Avicii fans will be glad to know that there are 25 tracks available in Avicii Invector and that the game right from the get-go is a quality auditory and visual experience.
In Avicii Invector, players will control a spacecraft and after a short calibration sequence, you’ll be thrust into the game’s first level. The controls are pretty straightforward and there isn’t anything extremely annoying here at all. It’s a rhythm game first and foremost so most gamers should know what they are getting into. If you’ve played a game like Guitar Hero or Audiosurf, Avicii Invector will immediately seem familiar to you.
Players will press a specific key on their keyboard or gamepad at the exact moment the ship passes the highlighted key on the track. Doing so with the perfect timing leads to higher scores and thanks to the game’s amazing visuals and catchy tunes, there’s a certain level of addictiveness to the game. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself launching Avicii Invector just to play a song or two and beat your old score a couple of times a day.
Therein lies the beauty of the game. It’s fast-paced, it’s visually pleasing and it’s well designed. The levels themselves all feature a unique aesthetic and there are some really well thought out prompts that keep the game challenging throughout. The addition of a local multiplayer mode is quite welcome and up to four players can compete with each other for a high score. We just wish the game included an online multiplayer mode but alas, this isn’t the case.
While there isn’t exactly a fully-fledged story mode, there’s a graphic novel-esque character that pops up throughout the game as you complete levels and she’s fully voice acted. She complements the real meat and bones of Avicii Invector’s gameplay though and there’s an emotional tale that’s told by her as she travels across space.
Each level can be played on Easy, Medium or Hard difficulties so there’s a lot of longevity to the game despite only having 25 tracks on offer. The addition of online leaderboards also means that more hardcore rhythm game fans can compete with others globally for high scores. Avicii Invector’s levels also incorporate segments where the player’s ship launches off the on-rails track and you’re left to fly around with a certain level of freedom. These segments are incredibly breathtaking and there’s a lot of neon-lit gateways to traverse. To call these sections anything less than a sheer genius would be a disservice to the game since they are not only resplendently beautiful but they double as a reprieve from the more intense rhythm-based button pressing segments. This is especially true if you’re making use of the boost feature which increases the speed of the game exponentially.
Avicii Invector is overall a superb rhythm game that delivers an addictive gameplay experience. If you’re a fan of Avicii’s music and enjoy playing games that challenge and visually engage you, this is a game you should definitely consider buying. If you’re not a fan of Avicii or his music though, the game probably would not appeal to you in the same way it does to fans.
