Lost Ark is one of the most anticipated game releases for 2022 having already found widespread release in the eastern markets of Korea and Russia following the initial launch two years ago – whilst there have been questions around monetization and microtransactions akin to the options like these on mobile in games of chance where payments make up a big part process, these answers will likely come within the next week or so prior to release – but a big announcement was made that may receive a mixed reception depending on the player reading the change.
Initially, the game was set to release in a number of different tiers – tier 1 would be the launch tier, the base level of content for the game with enough to see many players through for some time and where both other versions of the game started. Tier 2 would expand with more dungeons and end-game content for players to take part in but considered to be more of the same as Tier 1 just expanded a little. Tier 3, and where the game is currently at in the other regions, instituted big changes that would lead players to focus on one character for progression and change the way the game is played fundamentally for many – the expectation is that the western release of the game would start in Tier 1 but have an accelerated release path to Tier 3, but the most recent update plunges players directly in to Tier 3 content on launch with everything available, and this changing in progression goals for players too.
A huge number of players have been waiting for a new project to sink their teeth into, and this MMORPG may be exactly what players need and this huge launch change does make this something that players can strive towards – if the game were to launch into T1 and T2 content then there may not have been enough content to keep hardcore players going until the T3 launch, but this change does mean there’s a huge amount of progression to be done and change the experience quite dramatically too, and perhaps even plug the hole even temporarily in a genre that has been extremely volatile for quite a while.
It’s still up in the air whether the game can succeed in the west, it does have the very grind-oriented daily goals that eastern MMOs thrive on, but if early figures are to be followed with almost 100,000 concurrent players throughout the beta, this could be a great game for players to sink their teeth into, particularly if they’re waiting for some of the other big names to launch in the meantime.
