Panache Digital Games and renowned game creator Patrice Désilets have released the first episode of their new developer diary series, Behind the Shadows, offering an in-depth look at the making of the upcoming historical adventure 1666 Amsterdam.
The debut episode, titled The Vision: The Real City That Became a Myth, explores how the development team is transforming the real-world streets of Amsterdam into a richly atmospheric game world filled with mystery, superstition, and hidden narrative layers.
The Real City That Became a Myth | 1666 Amsterdam Devlog 01
Bringing Amsterdam Into the Game World
At the heart of the first devlog is the team’s commitment to authenticity and immersion. Rather than relying solely on reference materials, the studio travelled to Amsterdam in 2024 to experience the city firsthand.
Developers studied the streets, canals, architecture, sounds, and general rhythm of the city to better understand its scale and atmosphere. This on-site research plays a key role in shaping how 1666: Amsterdam will feel when players eventually step into its world.
Filmed at the historic Château Ramezay in Old Montreal, the episode also sets the tone for what will become a regular series, giving players ongoing insight into the game’s evolving development.
Exploration and Player Freedom
The developer diary also sheds light on some of the gameplay systems planned for 1666 Amsterdam. Exploration is set to be a major focus, with players able to enter buildings, traverse rooftops, and navigate densely detailed neighbourhoods.
One particularly unique feature highlighted in the video is the inclusion of a feline companion, which players can use to access new routes and approaches to exploration. This system is designed to encourage creativity and experimentation in how players interact with the city.
According to senior level designer Maxime Fortin, players will be able to approach environments in multiple ways, unlocking different opportunities depending on how they choose to navigate the world.
A Collaborative Creative Vision
The episode features key members of the development team, including co-founder and creative director Patrice Désilets, co-founder and executive producer Jean-François Boivin, researcher and marketing coordinator Éléa Gadéa, and senior level designer Maxime Fortin.
Each contributor highlights the importance of direct immersion in Amsterdam as part of the creative process. The team emphasises that experiencing the city in person allowed them to better capture its textures, proportions, and atmosphere in ways that would be difficult to achieve through digital references alone.
A City Reimagined Through Myth
While grounded in historical inspiration, 1666 Amsterdam aims to blend reality with myth, transforming familiar locations into something more mysterious and symbolic. The result is intended to reflect both the real city and a reinterpretation shaped by folklore and imagination.
This approach sets the tone for a game that is as much about interpretation and atmosphere as it is about historical representation.
Coming to Early Access in 2026
1666 Amsterdam is scheduled to launch in Early Access on PC in 2026, with console versions planned for a later date. Players interested in following development can now wishlist the game on Steam.
