Some incredible pop culture franchises have been created through the years, but few have gone on to have an impact quite like Star Trek.
From the big screen to gaming, it has lived long and prospered in a range of areas across the decades. This month, it was even celebrated with Star Trek Day. Held on September 8th, it included a special live stream celebration of 55 years of the franchise, while some intriguing announcements also emerged.
Boldly gaming
From a gaming perspective, GOG.com and Activision revealed that they were marking the anniversary by bringing classic Star Trek games back to life for modern operating systems.
According to a press release published on Games Press, the titles include the first-person shooter Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force, as well as Star Trek: Hidden Evil and Star Trek: Away Team. The simulation game Star Trek: Starfleet Command III is also now available, alongside the combat title Star Trek: Bridge Commander. Two real-time strategy titles – Star Trek: Armada and its sequel – are also coming soon to GOG.com.
These titles reflect the impact that Star Trek has had on gaming through the years. It is also still going strong through titles like the Star Trek: Timelines mobile game, while it has had an influence in more surprising ways as well. For example, when you play free slots at Slots Calendar, you can experience titles based on themes including Star Trek: The Next Generation. The title from SkyWind Group features famous characters from the show, while it boasts 50 paylines. It also sits alongside a host of other TV and film-inspired games, such as Downton Abbey and Narcos.
Small screen plans
Elsewhere on Star Trek Day, there were also announcements related to the future of the franchise on the small screen.
One of the most fascinating developments in the Star Trek universe in recent years has been Patrick Stewart reprising his role as the iconic Jean-Luc Picard. As Deadline reports, it was confirmed on Star Trek Day that Star Trek: Picard would return with a second season in February. Furthermore, a third season is also being planned.
Updates were also provided on a new entry in the franchise’s roster of shows, Strange New Worlds. TrekNews.net reported that a cast announcement revealed who we can expect to see in the show alongside the likes of Anson Mount, Rebecca Romjin and Ethan Peck. Notably, it was confirmed that Jess Bush is playing Nurse Chapel, while Celia Rose Gooding will be Cadet Nyota Uhura.
An incredible legacy
Few multimedia franchises have created a legacy quite like Star Trek and all the signs suggest that it is still in rude health.
The re-emergence of some classic games will be music to the ears of fans, while many will also be delighted to see that the future is looking bright on the small screen. Science fiction fans everywhere will be keen to discover what future seasons of Picard have in store, as well as what Strange New Worlds offers when it is finally unveiled.
